Looking for games like Control Resonant? If the melee combat, the warped-reality setting, and Dylan Faden’s journey through a paranatural Manhattan hooked you, this list has 11 games that scratch the same itch, some obvious picks, a few Remedy deep cuts, and two hidden gems saved for the end.
11 PC Games like CONTROL Resonant on Steam
Control Resonant drops you into a mind-bending strange world with a shape-shifting melee weapon. If that’s your poison, here are more games like Control Resonant which are equally intense, enjoyable and immerse you in a weird atmosphere like nothing else. Lets start the list.
01
CONTROL Ultimate Edition
Number one is the essential one, Control 1 itself. if you have already finished it, you can skip to the next game. If not, you need to get this one first as it lays the foundation for Control Resonant: same paranormal bureaucracy, same deadpan strangeness, same world to step back into in 2nd chapter.
You play as Jesse Faden, searching for her brother Dylan – who is the protagonist of 2nd chapter. Jesse walks into a shifting, government building called the Oldest House and ends up as the new Director. The house is full of paranormal stuff and it is the main highlight of this game in my opinion. You also have a weapon which changes shape, you can rip concrete out of the walls with your mind, and the whole place rearranges itself around you. Personally, it is one of my all time favorites.
This is a game which is really hard to describe into the words, but its feel, its strange vibe, it hooks you extremely hard. Even if you are new to this genre, this is a game that everyone must play in their lifetime.
02
Alan Wake 2
Next is Alan Wake 2, and it comes from the same studio, set in the same world but a different story. It’s a survival horror game split between two heroes: Saga Anderson, an FBI agent investigating ritual murders in a dark Pacific Northwest town, and Alan Wake, a writer trapped in a nightmare version of New York where reality bends like a story being rewritten. That reality-warping city and the shared universe with Control are why it belongs on any list of games like Control Resonant.
Play it if you care more about layered, meta storytelling than shooting. it’s slower and scarier than Control, the inventory can be fiddly, but the atmosphere is hard to beat and focuses more on the story. Also this is the only game which is not on steam, so you may need to get it from the Epic Store.
03
PREY (2017)
Next is Prey, the 2017 one, not to be confused with the 2006 game with same name. It’s space sci-fi immersive simulator set on a space station overrun by shape-shifting aliens called Typhon. Some of them disguise themselves as everyday objects, so you start eyeing every coffee mug with suspicion. Like Control, it’s a strange institution you unravel through logs, emails, and environmental clues, and you get odd powers alongside a wrench and a foam-spraying gun.
if you want same weirdness and like solving problems on your own ways, this is a gem for you. The opening is slow, but stick with it for few hours and you’ll find its world design, shape shifting aliens and the slow revealing story, all very enjoyable.
04
Devil May Cry 5
Next up is Devil May Cry 5, yes you heard right. Since Control Resonant leans hard into melee combat, Devil May Cry 5 is worth knowing and also very similar in its melee combat. It’s a stylish action game where you chain sword swings, gunshots, and weapon swaps into ranked combos, with three playable characters who all handle differently. Anyone who has played Control Resonant, can compare its combat to DMC series, because this is basically the blueprint for making weapon-swapping feel flashy.
If the melee fighting excites you more than the mystery, than Devil May Cry Games are your best pals. I personally like the Devil May Cry 4 the most, but its ancient now, so DMC 5 is better and safer option. The story is gloriously over the top, but the combat depth is superb and easy to pick up.
05
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Next Game is Ghostwire Tokyo. It is a supernatural action-adventure set in strange paranormal city. A mysterious fog has wiped out most of Tokyo’s population, and you’re stuck with a spirit-hunting partner inside your own head, fighting yokai with hand-gesture elemental attacks. The comparison to Control Resonant is a paranormal invasion reshaping a real modern city, plus you’re using supernatural powers instead of conventional weapons.
Play it if you love Japanese folklore and wandering a haunted open world. I think the atmosphere and creature designs are fantastic, but the open world leans on repetitive checklists, and the first-person combat feels quite different from Resonant but overall it has similar vibe.
06
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Up next is Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. If you want pure melee and head-spinning puzzling story, MGS Revengeance is great choice. You play as Raiden, a cyborg samurai, and the signature feature is Blade Mode, which lets you slice enemies and objects along lines you choose. It’s fast, aggressive, and built around parrying and counterattacks. What it shares with Control Resonant is the melee-first design and a willingness to be completely bonkers in tone.
Play it if you like short, punchy action and huge boss fights. In my personal take, the story is ridiculous in the best way and hard to wrap your head around if you try to connect it with other titles of Metal Gear Solid franchise. And in addition to enemies, you also have the camera to fight against, but still overall its very solid pick.
07
Returnal
Next on the list is Returnal. It puts you in the boots of Selene, who crash-lands on an alien planet and wakes up back at the crash site every time she dies, thus stuck in a death-loop. It’s a third-person shooter with roguelike runs, and the world reshuffles each cycle. The connection to Control Resonant is a cryptic mystery you piece together from strange fragments, plus fluid third-person combat with special abilities.
if you enjoy challenge and don’t mind losing progress when you die, Returnal is for you. Yes, it can be punishing, and the difficulty won’t suit everyone, but the mood is haunting, and the game feels very rewarding once you get in the rhythm.
08
Quantum Break
Next is Quantum Break. It is another Remedy game, and it’s the underrated one. After a failed experiment, Jack Joyce gains time-manipulation powers and gets pulled into a fight with a shadowy corporation called Monarch. You mix gunplay with abilities like freezing time, and the story is woven together with live-action episodes between the acts. What it shares with Control Resonant is that Remedy blend of powers, a secretive organization, and cinematic storytelling.
Play it if you like sci-fi mystery novel style games. When i played it, i felt that the live-action episodes are divisive, and the combat is decent rather than groundbreaking, but the story hooked me.
09
Death Stranding: Director’s Cut
Next one we have is Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. I chose it over Death Stranding 2 simply because 1st one is more engaging, and feels more weird as you are new to this story and setting. it is Hideo Kojima’s strange, atmospheric take on a broken America. You play Sam Porter Bridges, a courier hauling cargo across a landscape haunted by ghostly creatures called BTs, trying to reconnect isolated cities.
It shares the reality-warping weirdness of Control Resonant, and a mysterious organization, and it’s dense with cryptic lore. Try it if you want a slow, contemplative game with big ideas. Yes, it’s deliberately slow and won’t work for everyone, since a lot of it is walking and planning routes. But if it clicks, it’s unlike anything else, and the Director’s Cut adds more options for combat and travel.
11
The Medium
Before we wrap up, i also have two bonus picks for you. First, The Medium. You play Marianne, who can see the real world and the spirit world at the same time, and the game literally shows both on screen. It’s a paranormal horror set in an abandoned Polish hotel, with surreal spaces and creepy atmosphere reminiscent of Control’s stranger corners. Play it if you want a story-first horror game with little combat.
10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden
Second is Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. It’s an action RPG set in 1695 New England, where you play a ghost hunter duo, one living and one spirit, taking on hauntings with melee combat and supernatural abilities. Structurally it’s close to Control Resonant, since it mixes melee-led fighting with a supernatural story. It also asks you to make hard choices about the ghosts you meet. Play it if you want an emotional, choice-driven action RPG.
